I have often heard or read anglers talking about their "home waters". In many cases these are the rivers, streams or lakes near home where they fish regularly. To me home water implies a place you know well, a river or lake you know as more than just a casual friend. I also think it means we care about what happens and help to take care of the place.

I would say I have three home waters: the American River for stripers, and the Truckee River and the Little Truckee River for trout. For me the most challenging, most demanding and some days amazingly rewarding is the Little Truckee River. I never fail to be amazed at the size, selectivity and overall snobbishness of the trout that live in the river. The Little Truckee is an outstanding trout stream that needs and deserves our protection.

This month on Sunday, October 18th Sac-Sierra Trout Unlimited will be participating in a hands-on restoration project on the Little Truckee River as a part of the 14th annual Truckee River Day. The hands-on work will involve decommissioning two illegal, user created OHV hill climbs that drop down into the Little Truckee meadow on the west side of the stream. These two hill climbs dump sediment into important spawning areas of the Little Truckee. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including:

  • Scarify the hill climbs from top to bottom using Pulaski's, shovels and rock bars.
  • Stabilize stream bank's with rocks and woody debris
  • Help to cover the decommissioned hill climbs with either bark or native pine needles

The work sites are about a 5 minute walk downstream on established angler trails from the upper parking lot at the north end of the Little Truckee meadow. We will start at 9:00 in the morning and should be done by about 2:00 in the afternoon. You need to register in advance no later than October 9th. Download the registration form, fill it out and mail or fax it back to the Truckee River Watershed Council. You will be contacted in October with more details about the project including what to bring, when to meet and where to meet. I hope to see lots of you there.

Tight Lines,

Kevin Mather
